Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center
The Homestake Gold Mine was once the largest and richest gold mine in North America. The mine first gave up its ore in April of 1876 when two brother, Fred and Moses Manuel, struck gold in a rock outcropping near the town of Lead, just a few miles north of Deadwood. Homestake closed in 2002 but you can still view the open-cut and learn about the mine’s rich history. Tour the visitor center, gift shop, and enjoy gold panning and seasonal tours. Open year-round. Also, be sure to check out the The Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center in Deadwood.
